What is Systemic Work?
Systemic Work is often referred to as Family Constellations. This method is based on the insight that we are all deeply influenced by the systems we belong to: our families, workplaces, communities, and more. These systems shape our behavior, relationships, and patterns. This happens often unconsciously.
This method helps uncover hidden dynamics and entanglements in these systems, allowing healing movements toward greater clarity, belonging and balance.
The Origins: Bert Hellinger and Family Constellations
Family constellations were developed by Bert Hellinger (1925–2019), a German philosopher, theologian, and psychotherapist.
- He worked as a priest and missionary in South Africa, where he was deeply influenced by Zulu rituals honoring ancestors.
- Later, he left the priesthood and trained in psychoanalysis, Transactional Analysis, Gestalt therapy, and NLP.
- Inspired by Frank Farrelly’s provocative therapy and solution-oriented approaches, Hellinger synthesized his insights into what became known as Family Constellations.
Understanding Family Systems
Every person is part of multiple systems, with the family being the first and most influential.
In a family:
- We unconsciously carry patterns, beliefs and traumas from past generations.
- We may be “entangled” in the fates or emotions of others, often without realizing it.
- Healing comes from recognizing these dynamics and restoring balance and order.
A family system includes parents, children, grandparents, and other relatives, living or deceased. We also belong to other systems: schools, teams, workplaces, etc.
What is old wisdom?
“Old wisdom” refers to insights, proverbs, and teachings passed down through generations. This traditional and ancestral knowledge comes from lived experience, observation and from those who came before us.
Wisdom Principles
- Simplicity is strength.
- Know thyself.
- Everything changes.
- Honor those who came before.
